Entertainment/Activities
Oaklands bring in outside entertainment that can vary from "Tamsin Ball" singing classical songs with her amazing voice to a visit from "ZooLab" and its mixture of exotic creatures (snakes, spiders, giant snails amongst others). Local schools visit the residents for a sing-a-long section plus a monthly visit from "Monty" our designated Pat Dog. Also monthly we have "Barum Entertainers" who perform a selection of acts, play on keyboard and vocals including many songs from wartime & post war years - the residents love singing along. "Erwan" comes every other Friday to play his acoustic guitar and ukulele singing well loved songs.
Julian from Barnstaple Museum has visited Oaklands with very interesting items where he talks about them and reminisces with the residents.
Our very own, extremely talented Activities Coordinator, Brenda Worth organises activities to suit each resident. Residents are encouraged to continue hobbies and leisure interests that they enjoyed prior to coming into the care home. There are exercise classes in the lounge daily, and the staff organise bingo, quizzes and many other group activities. Craft activities are also organised to link with commemoration days.
Residents love to get involved in the many varied activities organised in the care home each month, one of the more popular activity is a good singalong.
Oaklands has organised different singing groups and even hand bell ringers.
Every Christmas , Oaklands' staff perform a very "unique" pantomime for the residents, families and neighbours. We have had "Snow White and Some Dwarfs", The Nativity, Christmas Carols, The Wizard of Oz which all proved to have been a hit, then it was followed by a festive tea and appearance by Father Christmas with his sack full of presents. This year we will be doing The Beauty and The Beast.
Oaklands has an in-house library, and there is a mobile library service provided on request and larger print books are available.
